My wife and I often joke about starting our own church. We would call it Susan and Charlie’s Church of Fun. No one would have to come unless they wanted to. There would be no offering, no lessons that made you feel guilty. We would sit and talk about life and love and drink and eat and just enjoy being alive.
We are having a meeting of our church tonight. Present are the two of us and our “child” Ranger. The humans are are eating oatmeal cookies and sitting in the cathedral of outside being serenaded by songbirds and our neighbor’s lawn mower. Ranger is sitting with his Frisbee and obsessing about the birds he will never catch. Demons in the form of skeeters (mosquitoes for those not raised in the South) are beginning to arrive in an effort to distract us from our purpose this evening, sitting.
The lesson for tonight is: it is okay to just sit on your ass chair and do nothing and be enveloped in the mystery of nature. We can join together in this sacred act no matter where we are. We can be in Alaska serving our country or in the Florida Keys serving our fellow man. We can be Methodist, Catholic, Buddhist or undecided and still participate. Whether you believe in God or the Force or are undecided matters not, because just sitting on purpose and being is all that is required.
Thoreau wrote about being in nature and BEING in nature. Just a few minute walk wasn’t enough, one needs to throw off the “world” and be the world. I’m paraphrasing or summing up here a little. I get too busy with the cares of the world that I forget the care of the world. The bird’s song and water in the fountain even the demon mosquitoes are part of the world in which we exist, but forget to live in.
Take your shoes off and set a spell.
